2020 - present
A collaboration with my partner, ceramic artist Olav Slingerland.
In 2020, the Netherlands went into lockdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Galleries closed their doors, exhibitions were cancelled, and commissions came to a standstill. It was a time marked by uncertainty and tension. While we had always been deeply engaged with each other’s practice, we chose to embrace the unexpected space and time this period created, and began developing a new series of earthenware bowls together.
We explored ways of giving the bowls a second skin, using casting techniques and the expressive qualities of the material itself. By manually altering the mould, subtle reliefs of drops or lines emerge, forming a range of distinctive patterns. In combination with the flowing colour transitions of the glaze, this process results in unique bowls with shifting optical effects.
The works are presented in the series: Drops, Lines and Botanicals. The series are available through the Olav Slingerland website.
